But we're not the only source to discover award winners, there are many organizations that review and award books. The evaluation and selection process varies substantially when it comes to choosing the best of the best. Many entities rely on panels of reviewers, or simply an individual. Some use focus-groups, online and/or offline voting, while others use a combination of all these approaches. We recommend organizations that use a combination and avoid online voting as the sole evaluation method as the online voters may have never used the material. We also recommend organizations that utilize a peer-reviewed and standarized evaluation process.

Do they use real teachers, an Advisory Board, children, industy experts, etc.? Are the reviewers qualified? How many reviewers evaluate each submission? What is the award criteria? How focused is the award—meaning does the organization award hundreds of categories or are they narrow in focus? It's important to verify that the entity has a mission other than simply providing awards for promotional purposes and profit.
